Low-rise buildings, the ridge seen gently in the distance. Alleyways pass by quickly in a blur, unfamiliar yet refreshing air seeps through the gap of the car window. Everything is unlike the city. On the way to the lodge, I pull over and take a stroll, longing to melt into the scenery before nightfall. I stumble upon a memorial park and notice people soaking up the moment. I nestle under a pine tree. Memories of the busy, routine life start to fade. I feel the wind against my skin, a pleasant sensation.

I wake up and wander into the living room. There I find a half-awake Toto looking up from under a slowly twinkling tree. As I lie down on the carpet and snuggle, she slumps into my arms. I pet her shaggy hair. From the dying fireplace, I occasionally hear the crackling embers. As I close my eyes and focus on the sound, I sense a slight movement from my hand on her stomach.

When the party is in full swing, I excuse myself scarce and smoke in the hallway. I find an empty room and flop down on the leather couch. When I open my eyes, I see someone sitting across the table. She passes me a glass in silence and I gulp it down. The burning sensation in my throat shuts my eyes tight. I open my eyes again and realize it is morning. I remember her laughter, which I found beautiful.

Cedarwood, Amber, Melon
Monotonous outfits and taste, conversations drone on like a broken record on repeat. As I started to become faint with boredom among the banquet crowd filled with faces like John Malkovich, I noticed him in the distance. People around him laughed harder, as if trying to ignore his presence. Our gazes locked and I felt a strong attraction, but also a subtle amount of fear. I turned my back and struggled to focus on the meaningless conversation with acquaintances.

The park drenched in the early morning rain quietly sparkles with the sudden sunshine. Even though they are no longer with me, it has become a hobby of mine to visit this place on a given day every month. Looking from the pavilion it is uncertain if it is sunrise or sunset, with the rain clouds hovering over the high-rise buildings across the river far away.

When the name was called the person sitting next to me slowly rose among applause and cheers. Looking younger than I expected, she responded with elegant smile. Her steps towards the platform was restrained, yet confident, her calm voice sounded as if she has never experienced any lacking. The clothes she wore looked like the best armor in the world. When she returned, she sat back down smiling at me saying she was nervous. She doesn’t even know me.

By the time you’re done unpacking, the yellow sun was already inside the kitchen of the new house. You take out your black tea and a teapot you got as a gift and head out to the terrace. You stare into the color that darkens like the sunset the more you pour it to the cup and suddenly run to the kitchen as if something came up to your mind. You take out a lemon from the fridge, slice it thinly and drop it into your cup before the tea gets cold.

As you go under the ground you see a big atelier that is connected to the forest at the back of the building. Pieces of wood piled up everywhere and those that did not make it to become a masterpiece. The space is piled up with only one person’s touch like a frame. As you open the big door that is connected to the forest, a rainstorm comes through as if it waited for you and the lost time dozing off in the corner wakes up.

Inside the drawer that you have never opened before, a familiar powdery scent suddenly showed its existence among a scarf, accessories, and all sorts of clutter. As you open an old note with a coated four-leaf clover in it, you see the names and contacts of your acquaintances written down on one side, and a faded old picture of a young woman brightly smiling with her suit and heels that looks just like me.

I limp back to the bench and roll up the training pants. The wound on the knees pounds like my heart. Not sure if I’m embarrassed by the fall or not wanting the practice time to go to waste, sweating on the back of my nose even though I’m under a shade. Far away from the playground, I hear the teacher blowing a whistle and friends laughing. As my sweat dries, my eyes meet his/hers while looking back indifferently at the sweet scent felt through the dust. The sweet smell of bubble gum blows over my shoulder even when I turn my head.

The mirror-like pond reflected the clear sky as I arrived. While walking through the grass with the rain from last night lingering, I see her car through the bushes far away. Just like a scene from a movie, she was reading a book half-sitting on the bonnet. When I approached, her eyes peeping at me were full of mischief. I sit next to her and glance at the scenery in silence. The warmth of the engine remains.

Sitting on a surfboard, I make waves on the sea with my legs. I see the bottom of the sea through the waves reflecting the sun. Although I was just in it, I wonder about the deep ocean. As I climb down the surfboard, the coldness enamors my body. I take a short breath and swim into the ocean.

The library which I occasionally visit harbors a reddish brown bookshelf in the corner. On its aged shelves lay old books, fitting to its character. A particular one draws my attention among many that are wrapped with faded covers, asking to be picked up and opened. The pleasant, delicate smell from turning its pages makes me close the book again and turn the pages over from the first page to the very end.

Immediately after opening the door to botanical garden B, I see a tall tropical tree. The top leaf was almost touching the glass ceiling, and I bowed from the strain on my neck from looking up so high. The rain that started last night was thinning. I take an umbrella and go to a nearby mountain. Taking heavier steps than usual on the blackish-brown earth, I see a bench by a pine tree. Right under the tree, I sit on a relatively dry spot and gaze at the blurry scenery shrouded in fog.

In the café, people are sparsely seated. After looking around for a good spot, I lay my purse on the table near the passageway. I was feeling depressed by the sound of spring rain that started to come down at night. The night felt like I lost all the qualities of love. Nevertheless, I know that I want to love and be loved, and I will hide these feelings and live tomorrow. Outside the window, it was raining until morning and petals flowed with rainwater. After all, we are all insecure but lovable beings.

Unexpected sudden cold air woke me up earlier than usual. Not knowing that I am awake, my cat was playing with my shoes lying next to the bed and the scent of the candle I burned last night still remained in my purple blanket. I fled from the city that haunted me for my whole life and settled here where it embraced me for who I am. Ironically I dream of my hometown every night at this perfect and peaceful place.

Like a large bonsai, the house was something close to perfection and alive. The space made of sensitivity that could not be easily touched, was being filled up with fragrance of his favorite tea, and I was getting small enough then a bonsai on his table and felt his forest. I wondered what he gazed out of the window and what he thought the eye of the public.
